California Olive Countertops

Our incredible team here at Fusion Flatworks made stunning custom california olive countertops for a lovely couple in Phoenix, Oregon. As part of their dream home renovation, we designed one-of-a-kind countertops for their kitchen, laundry room, and bathrooms resulting in beautiful continuity throughout.

Really enjoyed working with everyone at Fusion Flatworks. They created the perfect one of a kind countertops for our home. Allowing us to visit their shop, be a part of placing some of the wood in position, as well as keeping us updated with pictures and videos of the process, was an added bonus. They were able to take our vision and turn it into reality. Thank you Greg, Ken, Brettani and all the others involved. We love the countertops!!!”

Walnut

Walnut is known for quality, and elegance. Walnut is incredibly versatile, with both cool and warm tones, lending perfectly to both rustic and elegant designs. High quality English Walnut is often marbled with light accents. Claro walnut is often figured. Walnut can be obtained in up to 70” diameter.

Box Elder

Box Elder is our favorite wood to stain and dye. It takes color easily and accurately. It is a joy to work with, stable, compliant and smells like fresh cut lawn. Similar to maple in that we often find unique figures such as flame, popcorn quilt, tight curl or fiddleback when we peel back the bark. When bugs burrow into box elder, the wood turns red around the holes, which of course, F2 loves to find – opportunities for epoxy artistry to shine. Figured box elder is most available in a diameter of 30-60 inches.

California Olive

There is nothing quite like California Olive. Regular cut has long cut lines, but we only use it “cookie-cut” because from the artistic point of view, it is the highest and best use every time. California olive is readily available in 4-6 feet in diameter slabs. Most valuable to note from a designer perspective are the fingers that form from the pitch, creating the fluted grain patterns. In addition, this wood has the unique ability to lean warm or cool depending on the epoxy accent colors.

Cottonwood

Alive with unexpected color and depth from red and yellow to gray blue and cream. Aggressive live edge and deep three-dimensional figure. Cottonwood can occasionally surprise with some of the greatest chatoyance we have ever seen. It is more challenging to work with because of its long grain, but the end result is worth the work. We have slabs of cottonwood ranging from 18-36 inches wide and 12 feet long!

Maple

Maple grows in different varieties all over the country. From ordinary straight grain to bold beautiful burl, maple has the most variety in figure of all the wood we work with. We have access to gorgeous Pacific Northwest maple as wide as 60 inches or as long as 20 feet. The warm golden cream colors over time, can develop deep red tones.Spalted maple is one of our favorites to work with. The black lines that develop over time reduce the density and structural integrity of the wood making it perfect for epoxy work where we fill in the voids to both stabilize the wood and maximize its unique figure. Maple has unique acoustic qualities, making it a perfect choice for musical instruments. Complex and interesting figures such as popcorn, quilt and fiddleback are often found in maple.

Myrtlewood

Myrtlewood grows in two places on  earth: Israel and the Southern Oregon Coast. As it ages, it becomes a golden brown which is more readily available. The more coveted dark Myrtle gets black streaks and is ideal for artistic projects. We love to find the most rare slabs, sometimes up to 8 feet in diameter of dark Myrtlewood.

Oak

Oak is familiar and feels like home to Americans. An oak tree sawn up into lumber may seem ordinary, but when quarter sawn, would take your breath away with its ribbon and flake. And then there is Oak Burl – uncommon and surprising even to wood enthusiasts. The “Unicorn Table” for example, stumped even the most discerning eyes. We work mostly with black oak (as opposed to white or tan) which is most commonly available in 36-40 inch diameter, but occasionally much larger. Oak burl ranges from 20-50 inches. We often see “healed over” oak, where the tree grows over pockets of bark and in the end, creates uniquely shaped voids in the wood that we fill with epoxy – the unicorn is an example.

Redwood

Full of character and chatoyance, F2 has access to both reclamed old growth and second growth of this majestic tree. The rich, warm tones are perfect alacarte, but also stunning when accented by white, black, blues or greens. Variations of these majestic giants are Curly Redwood, that grows with a natural curvature, or Sequoia Redwood, tapered and knotty, perfect for rustic lodge mantels.

Russian Olive

Russian Olive stands out because of its khaki green color. It compares in many ways to Elm in terms of grain pattern and chatoyance. It is rare to find large slabs of Russian Olive. This is an evasive species, but woodworks throughout the industry have discovered the beauty in it.
