Oak

Oak is familiar and feels like home to Americans. An oak tree sawn up into lumber may seem ordinary, but when quarter sawn, would take your breath away with its ribbon and flake. And then there is Oak Burl – uncommon and surprising even to wood enthusiasts. The “Unicorn Table” for example, stumped even the most discerning eyes. We work mostly with black oak (as opposed to white or tan) which is most commonly available in 36-40 inch diameter, but occasionally much larger. Oak burl ranges from 20-50 inches. We often see “healed over” oak, where the tree grows over pockets of bark and in the end, creates uniquely shaped voids in the wood that we fill with epoxy – the unicorn is an example.
